The first Icelandic airline, Icelandair, was founded in Reykjavík March 22nd 1919. The airline bought Iceland’s first airplane of the type Avro 504K, made in Britain. It arrived in Iceland from Denmark in 1919. The first overseas Icelandic passenger flight took place on July 11th 1945. Gullfaxi, the first Icelandic jet aircraft of the type Boeing 727-100, started regular passenger flights on July 1st 1967. The first Boeing 757-300 was added to the fleet in spring 2002. In April 1938 a newly founded airline, Flugfélag Akureyrar, bought a Waco YKS-7 seaplane. This plane was called “The Eagle” started regular passenger and postal flights, becoming the starting point for professional aviation in Iceland. In 1940 Icelandair bought another seaplane, of the type Waco ZKS-7, usually called “The Sea Eagle”. The renewal of Icelandair’s domestic fleet started in 1965 with the acquisition of Fokker F.27-100 Friendship. Aircraft of this type served on domestic routes for 27 years. The domestic fleet was again renewed in 1992 with the acquisition of four Fokker 50 aircraft.
