Thingvellir has been a church site since shortly after the adoption of Christianity. The present church was consecrated in 1859. The church possesses many splendid artifacts, among them a pulpit dating back to 1683 and an altarpiece painted by local farmer Ófeigur Jónsson in 1834. The church acquired another altarpiece by Danish painter Anker Lund in 1896. The baptismal font dates back to 1962 and was designed by local farmer Guðmann Ólafsson. The church was declared a protected site January 1st 1990, according to law on national relics which came into force on June 1st 2007. This means that the Church is the property of the Icelandic State. The Bessastadir Church and the Hólar Cathedral have already been declared historic sites and are owned by the State
