The Culture House was built for the National Library and the National Archives in 1906 to 1908. It was opened to the general public in spring 1909. The National Museum and The Museum of Natural History were also parts of the building for a long time. In the Museum House, as it came to be called, some of the most cherished treasures of the Iceland were stored under one roof for a long time. The Museum of Natural History also had its quarters in the house for many years. The old Museum House got a new and changed role when the prime minister opened the Culture House on April 20th 2000. Some splendid exhibitions were opened the same day. Meeting rooms in the building‘s west wing also featured small thematic exhibitions.
